Hope and Faith: The Children of Sindangan Elementary School
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

This story has been featured in a major TV station here in the Philippines. I was able to watch it twice and I must say- Each time I see it...the experience stays if not grows further.

It is about a public school located in a remote part of Southern Leyte, where students vie for education given their limited resources and meager means. One cannot help but re think you're blessings upon seeing this grade schoolers walk for school, around an hour or two each day. Given the scarcity of finances and support, one cannot help but be awed as to how this humble school was heralded as the best in terms of students passing the NAT(National Achievement Test).

Of course, it is given that the achievement was good if not great but what makes this story one of a kind is the ways its students value education more than anything else. There have been the likes of Michelle, Abigail and Mildred, whose passion for learning remains not wavered. As to how they consume themselves with the thirst for knowledge as compared to those who have been presented with every material wealth. They do not mind the long walks to school; the absence of proper clothing or the lack of facilities in their own classrooms. What simply matters is the chance to be educated and hone whatever talent they have, always seeking education as their only chance in life.

I, too, was a product of a public school. And I must say that eagerness and patience made the difference all along. Poverty robs one of chances that are hard to miss but one need not suffer because of it. That poverty, after all...can serve as a spring of hope.
